Returning to the issue of community, locality, pre-modern undifferentiated notion of community. Polanyi discussed the way in which the economy (the way we understand it) did not exist. Before of the way social experiences were embedded in the social relations and ritual structures of local communities. What was once agricultural economy was embedded in personal relationships, followed on who you were born to etc. Economic transactions were socially and culturally mediated by face to face encounters. Disembedding of modern economy (rise and expansion of market economy). Economy becomes autonomous and abstracted from immediate everyday experiences. Where you were born etc becomes less important.
