EDSL 311 Lecture 4: EDSL311_Feb2_GrammarLexisContd
Document Summary
Both can be very important for the meaning of a text. More schemata = less reliance on grammar, more on lexis: aka top-down processing. Fewer schemata = must rely more on grammatical cues: aka bottom-up processing. Generalizations are constrained to what actual words are being used. Aerial view of grammar: the farther you are, the simpler it looks. At which level do you teach: 30k feet, 10k feet, ground level, add s to 3rd person singular verb, add s to nouns to make plural, 30k = frustrated by exceptions . Many learner grammar errors are lexical in nature. It"s very hard to explain a rule sometimes. Aim for 10k ft on the aerial view: ground level = misses useful generalization.
