The challenge for humans was to embrace bother sides of existence. For layong , the poet is the person who brings together these opposing forces. The swimmer - the poem is about sex. In a nuber of ways, the swimmer is about the loss and recovery of youth . In what ways is the passage of time depicted in this poem. The last wave romping in to throw it boyhood upon the marble sand. Salmon swim back to where they were born agaisnt the current when reproducing. He compares poets to a swimmer and to a male salmon.
