In the play, the characters are in conflict with their space. Its not just realistic in terms of its imagery. The play explores different possibilities for characters to struggle with their environment. Walter in an expressionistic way is a person who has a kind of fear in him that makes him agitated, like an illness his body is struggling with and he has to resolve. There"s an inner struggle inside him that he needs to resolve by the ending of the play. A key moment for walter and beneatha in the play. There"s a part of these characters that aren"t visible, that aren"t in their immediate surroundings but shows up during moments of extremity. This is an expressionistic moment in the play, a moment when the lighting shows us what goes on inside these characters, in their minds and their souls.
