Document Summary

The ending of the play signifies the beginning of something, the beginning of a situation that will be a dangerous one for them. It"s the positive ending of something but also the beginning of a difficult process for them. The play seems to suggest that this family just by taking care of themselves could nevertheless serve as an image of human beings serving in the civil rights struggle. The play asks us to recognize that there is so much more going on in the play that even the characters themselves do not realize; they are a part of history. At the end of the play, walter experiences a moment of self loathing as he works himself up to a state of lack of dignity and self respect when he calls back karl. He becomes the image of his father in that moment; inheriting a sense of dignity and self-respect.
