Pinter got a lot of requests to explain his work. Like beckett, he was very resistant to providing explanation, the work should stand alone like a piece of visual art. Early on in his writing career, he discovered the work of samuel beckett and they became friends. He often sent his scripts to beckett asking for his opinion. Pinter"s plays are about rooms; space as something significant and meaningful. When playwrights decided on a title for their play, they point to an aspect of a play that bears significance and draws the readers attention to it. The caretaker is a role in this play, over the course of the play we see different characters take on the role of "the caretaker. " The title gives an uplifting feel to the play. Davies accepts the role of caretaker from mick but not from aston.
