ENGL 319 Lecture 17: November 22nd
Document Summary
Question of internal narrator = part of the story. A narrator is supposedly a character like any other that is part of the fiction and that cannot make anything. Mock essay: postulate the existence of an implied author expressing an ironic insincere attitude towards the figure of an imaginary narrator. Distinction between implied author intentionalist or real author intentionalist. Postulating, talking about some sort of hypothesized entity that seems to have produced the text we are talking about. Difference between the fictive narrator and a kind of apparent author that seems to have designed the whole thing. A swift like figure that by all appearances seems to have produced the work. Part of our interpretative endeavor should revolve around identifying what sort of author seems to have designed the work. Distinction between the psychology of composition (what was on the artist"s mind when they produced their work) vs. the public science of criticism.
