Represent different kinds of impulses, beowulf as a civilizing force. Grendel is an anti-social force and anti-art, hates song of the bard. Associated with the nighttime, dark forces of destruction that always threaten the civilizing forces. Detective fiction: detection and criminal having an affinity, which is why detective can figure out the mystery. We know grendel is doomed as soon as we meet him. God-cursed grendel, comes in as a predator, this demon from hell, foaming at the mouth, looking forward to what he"s going to do. His glee was demonic looking for mayhem. Narrator says: his fate that night was due to change, his days had come to an end. We see him only at the end of his career, no longer a successful predator. The supposed predator becomes the prey who is grabbed by beowulf. For in all his days he had never been clamped and cornered like this.
