Ekphrasis: poem that is about a painting: starry night by van gogh, capture the visual work in writing. Could be a difficult task especially if the visual work deals with issues with kinesis and movement. Van gogh wanted to capture the natural world through his painting and sexton wanted to capture motion, things that are changing, rapid alterations and then things that still and unchanging through literary words. Same thing that van gogh did, the changing cosmos in the sky compared to the town that is still and unchanging, symmetrical. Sexton tries to do this with her painting. On the one hand, it has been consigned all together to the past (s a cultural/ social ideal, it no longer exists). On the other hand, we can only imagine sexton"s town as an archetypal setting.
