Process of encounter between first nations and european settlers who came here and met them. Caw-wacham painting takes place in an area that"s no longer canada; boundaries were different then. Modern canada & usa were still taking shape. So the painting recalls back to before they congealed into their modern form. Representation born out of intercultural collision; this is when early canadian lit happened. Between conventions of written and printed english, and the life and experience unfolding on this continent. Encounter interesting problem - no pure view of first nations culture in the stories we read. Aboriginal experience refracted through conventions of canadian literature. Agriculturally settling the land, discovering the natural land & how to live on it. Big part of project of early canada. The larger colonial sense of the cultural process of adapting practices & beliefs elsewhere into this new space. Pastourelle a vallangoujard painting; pastoral scene of a shepherdess.
