White dwarfs are stars that have given off their light light years ago. By the time we see the light, the actual star has disappeared. In discussing the crucifixion ondaatje does not talk about christ but the third man. The third man is never talked about. This is a poem in which ondaatje articulates his aesthetic. Aesthetic meaning the set of beliefs and rules that govern your art. You conquer your fear by facing it. Artists that communicate through silence are the true artists and heroes. Dashiell hammett: communist writer who refused to give up the names of other members of the acp. This poem is an achievement because it is based on the very idea of contradiction. He is using words to praise the power of silence. The egg"s beauty is that it is unbroken so though you cannot see it, you know there is something inside.
