When the novel opens, we are told about o being a well-known figure: in the very first lines, already have a character presented as well- respected and well-known. After that, we get an image of his physical appearance: attempt by the author to draw out a great, impressive, distinctive figure. Not just distinctive physically, but also socially: how he deals with other people. He did not want to be like his father, who was (cid:498)weak(cid:499: this is what inspires him to take part in ikemefuna"s killing, (cid:498)dazed with fear, okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down.
