ENGL 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: The Sick Rose
Document Summary
Text: in relation to some sort of notational system based on syntax. Text: set of marks that count as coherence units. Texts are place where there is a free play of signification. We have to postulate some kind of relationship some sort of psychological contribution from somebody. Text: a structure, a perceptible object that we can all have access to. Work: something ephemeral that has something to do with meaning. Other argument: the work might imply an action or performance of some sort. Work: act/object paradox: a work can be an object, achievement, but also a process, an activity of some sort. Something is a text if it consists of some sort of set of mark that functions in a certain notational system. Syntactically coherent set of marks in the english language. Causal approach: text is a text only if made in a certain way. The work is a product of aiming towards certain effects.
