EPSC 180 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Olympus Mons, Magnesium, Shield Volcano
Document Summary
Earth has relatively high iron concentration = high density. Formed about 30 billion years after formation of earth. Rocks on surface of moon: 4. 44 billion years old. Object (mars-like in size) hits earth, splashes moon off earth: hit melted surface of earth, surface cooled down enough that crystals could form (about 4. 44 billion years ago) Moon then reassembles itself (age very similar to age of oldest rocks/minerals on earth) Less dense than earth not much iron was splashed out when earth was it, so low concentration of iron in moon = low density. Earth has never seen other side of the moon: dark side of moon not back of moon, the side of the moon not currently lighted. Moon has no atmosphere, no surface pressure. Northern lowlands, southern highlands: all cratered, surface can help in estimating age, magnetic field imprints in rocks found in highlands this had to have been generated within mars.
