Tsunamis are huge waves caused by a sudden displacement on the sea floor (displacing water) Tsunami: habour wave: it is harmless until it approaches coastline/habour. Therefore being in the ocean on a boat away from the coastline during a tsumani, you are more safe. Cascadia subduction zone: much higher risk compared to 50 years ago (population) Just like any other wave with a few peculiar characteristics: Ompared to normal ocean waves (that may have wave lengths at most 100m) the wave length of a tsunami wave can reach 100 km in length. Tsunamis have a series of waves (not a single wave) Period: time it takes a wave crest to pass a certain point. They are expressed throughout water column in the ocean (if water depth = 4000m, and we are at the bottom of the ocean, and the tsunami is felt all the way down to the bottom of the ocean floor)
