Document Summary

Unsustainable development: subsistence system : appropriation of ressources for individual and group survival. => small pop densities + limited technological intensity = system relatively stable: modern industrialized economy : appropriation of ecosystem services to support nation-states and international trade. Global trade => profound global environmental impact. Before that growth was promoted and downsides were localized and limited: other books published to raise awareness about the environment by making predictions and urging for things to change to avoid the worst. Negative impacts : used by skeptics (things didn"t happen as the predictions said they would : is there really a risk?) Positive impacts : beginning of environmental activism => raised awareness of the global human impact/ role of consumption & pop growth, developed the notion that there are limits to growth/ precursor to sustainable development. The rise of international environmental agreements : 1975 = convention of international trade in endangered species (cites) of flora and fauna.
