Humans designate as resources": only those things which they have the knowledge and the technology to use. Natural stuff failing to meet this requirement are. Western (european derived) views of the environment (ideal landscape: we start with paradise. Safety, happiness, and progress for this point of view depended on rise out of wilderness. Early greeks very much viewed the wilderness as dangerous and repulsive. Humans in this tradition wanted to control nature: fire was the first step, domestication of animals, clearing land and raising crops.
