• Food as a resource (we eat .005% of what we could eat, we are very
dependent on some cereals (8 cereals form most of our food consumption))
• Importance of agriculture in global economy (we invest in cereals like rice,
markets develop around them, we are highly dependent on a small number
of crops that we call food)

• Physiological needs and cultural norms

• High reliance on a few cereals
Importance of agriculture in global economy
• International trade- a trillion dollars in agricultural products are traded each
year.
• Source of national revenue
• Employment (directly (harvesting, planting) or indirectly (digging ditches,
repairing roads that bring products to market / of worlds workers work
in agriculture.
• Livelihoods – way of life for a lot of people, provides subsidence for over 1/3
of population, marketable surplus, provides food, fuel, possible $ for
investment. In Canada, 1.9% workforce in Agriculture (less than call centers).
• Environment- bad boy sector because uses 40% of land surface and produces
30% of greenhouse gases. 95% of water taken is used for agriculture.
