Document Summary
The word smog came out of the industrial revolution when coal combustion mixing with fog coming from the north sea created bad air fog + smoke = smog. Event: london, 1954 at this time there was a temperature inversion which inhibited the vertical motion of air + parcels of pollution (temperature inversion happens with calm/light winds: graph on slide 15: Shows a spike in number of deaths where you see a combination of peak smoke and peak so2. There"s definitely a correlation between the two but you can"t say it"s a causality. Smog doesn"t effect everyone equally some vulnerable groups are more at risk than others (e. g. small children, elderly, people with respiratory problems) Ozone (o3) is a colorless gas with an unpleasant odor. It occurs naturally at ground level in trace amounts. It is a secondary pollutant meaning it doesn"t get emitted directly. Vocs combine with nox to allow ozone to build up.
