Measurement and research design part 2 (january 23rd 2017) Objective measure are less prone to recall bias. Scale: multi-item measure; items are inter-correlated, summary measures, scales validated. In general, would say your health is: excellent poor scale. Can be treated as: continuous, categorical or dichotomous variable. Experiment more control possible: experiment group that receive the treatment and a control group that receives the placebo (allows you to isolate the effect of the treatment) But, often unethical/impossible in research on place can"t knowingly expose a community to something hazardous. Moving to opportunity for fair housing demonstration (mto) Observational study where the researcher cannot control intervention in an area or community: natural variation occurs. Example: evaluation of diet and health effects of a naturally occurring intervention the provision a new food hypermarket in a food-retail deficit community. A controlled before and after postal survey of a representative sample of residents in two areas.
