that’s the assigned reading.
First seven chapters of “Business Model You” book is correlated to
the assignment.
What are people skills?
oOur ability to properly deal with people over a wide range of different
professional situations.
oNeed to be good at reading people
oNeed to be good at reading situations
oAnticipation is key; the better we anticipate the better we can react.
oThis all starts with knowing your own skills and competencies.
Two common misconceptions;
oHaving good people skills means being liked and popular; NO- you
normally have to make unpopular decisions and sometimes you won’t be
liked
oYou are born with or without people skills- ALSO NO. You can develop
them.
Why Common Sense is not Enough
o“Behaving professionally” is made up of skill and common sense
common sense; widely held beliefs that are considered to be valid,
prudent and sound, which are also adopted by your group
members.
oProfessional skills are acquired but first, you must have some insight into
yourself
What people and professional skills and competencies are well-
developed in me?
which ones can I improve on and how?
oThis is personal, introspective and subjective, which means only you know
the answer.
Honest self and peer assessment is critical to improvement.
What are social skills?
oThe capacity for situation specific, inter-personal behavior that is effective
to achieve desired outcomes.

manners;

popularized emotions as an integral part of organizational life.
What is Emotional Intelligence? EI
oEI is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for
motivating ourselves and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in
our relationships (Goleman, 2006)
oGoleman 2013 divides EI into four dimensions; self-awareness, self-
management, empathy/social awareness, and relationship management
