Revolt of the comuneros of new granada 1781. Essentially creole protests vs powerful economic monopolies - preceded by patrician criollo attempts at resistance to reforms organized through municipal government. Protest against the imposition of new taxes. One of the most serious threats to spanish authority in the colonial period. It led to virtual suspension of royal government and local administration. Mainly urban mestizos but appeal to criollo leadership: at height they elected a parallel government of criollo aristocrats. Even tried to name manuel guerrero ponce de leon, count of selva. Fairly successful: spanish bachelors were expelled, the tax on estancos was suspended.
