Period of questioning what it means to be citizen/subject. Irish get parli, but not as much as colonies. Concentrated in areas brit had successfully occupied in rev war. Feels v strongly that evacuation has to happen. Abt 60,000 total, large proportion blacks fleeing slavery. Ns was v dependent on military contracts, v dependent on brit crown. Ships coming from boston would hijack ns boats. Some to quebec, east florida, britain, jamaica, bahamas. Those who go to east florida quickly must move again, as soon after land is given to spain. Free blacks are london"s first significant black population. 20,000 free blacks who had joined british. Commissions set up to make all free blacks register. Elite develops, those who successfully lobby for more land/power. All kinds of prot denominations, levels of social privilege. Black population is effectively segregated into adjacent towns--ex: birchtown. Tension--black people given less/poorer land, thought of as competing labourers. Thomas carleton b/comes gov (is brother of other carleton--nepotism)
