Document Summary

Mycenae is said to have hosted a great king in homeric poems. Not sure if this is the same site as in homer"s writing. As the great sites in crete decline there is a break out of palaces in greece, especially around. 1500 bce - 1200 bce mycenae, reaches height between these times. Mycenae is on a hilltop, heavily fortified (very different from crete and knossos). Started as an original palace and expanded to a larger perimeter and a burial ground just inside of the large wall. Large complex structures with defensive works, store rooms, cisterns, etc. Pylos is another mycenaean site on the coast. These sites are considered to be small kingdoms with a palace at each, but a shared culture with all of the sites. Excavated graves suggest big culture and widespread connections. Mycenae had pit tombs (large holes in the ground; sometimes a family to a shaft tomb).
