Document Summary

Roman historical periods: regal period (753-509 bc) - the 7 kings, early republic (509-287 bc, middle republic (287-133 bc, late republic (133-31 bc) The early period of roman republics is a very long period of internal political crisis . The plebeians (underclass) are abused by the patricians (aristocrat), who have all the wealth. The plebeians wanted protect from the patricians. Some plebeians were just as wealthy if not more than the patricians. Only the patricians can be in the priesthood and the hold all the power in this area. Then the plebeians are also losing money. This dominates roman sources for this period. These classes are not strictly wealth divisions or privilege. It seems like certain families/groups claim a certain amount of religious prestige: praenomen nomen cognomen, just a given name, denoted the clan which determined patrician or plebeian status, a nickname. Eventually ~15 clans claim they are patrician clans.
