Western decline and eastern survival: from alaric to romulus augustulus. : byzantine empire : from alaric to romulus augustulus. Late 4th century after the ctesiphon disaster, roman empire faces great pressure. Traditional barbarian groups are forming kingdoms and becoming so powerful that even rome was hiring them as soldiers. New threats in 370s arise from another barbarian group = huns, lead by attila the hun. Meaning this was a real battle fought between rome and a barbarian group (not like the battle of totenberg forest) Roman army went in organized and tried to attack the barbarians but they lost, whereas in the past would have won (barbarians beat rome for the first time in a fair fight) The battle sent shock waves through the empire and set the military back. Huns place pressure on the visigoths, forcing them to leave and find new land (encroaching on rome)
