Makes pathological anatomy and research on patients possible. Earliest hospitals: rome, earliest military hospitals, islamic world from 8th to 12th century elaborate civil hospitals. Stages of hospital development: religious institution (from early middle ages) Originates from almhouses and monastery infirmaries late 10th century, hospitals founded by parish churches, religious orders, or wealthy and pious philanthropists. Religious charitable institutions: primary function is moral and religious, medical care provided as part of charity. Of sores and wounds, common pharmaceuticals provided mainly by untrained religious personnel though doctors might be attached: care for souls, partially medical (from 18th century) 2 types of hospitals: europe largely public; size permits specialization, britain, us , canada: mix of voluntary and public hospitals. Dependent on annual contributions or subscriptions for their financing.
