Oka crisis of 1990 (the kaneun"keh :ka nation"s refusal) Helped bring exposure, likely it literally saved lives of many indg ppls. Understanding oka as a refusal and articulation of indigenous nationhood. Can govt saw indg ppls as non-traditional terrorists . Couldn"t understand that indg ppls were articulating their own nationhood outside of settler/colonial and nation state paradigms. In reality, women were ones who called first for peaceful protest, then managed refusal/standoff. Canadian govt has been selling indg land to non-indg ranchers. Has been no treaty ceding land--therefore illegal under canadian law. American rancher who had been illegally sold land by can govt comes to agreement w sundancers. They can perform ceremony on his land, as long as they erect no permanent structures. End up putting up a fence to keep cattle out of temp structures.
