City as center of vice, but also opp for ministry (esp among imms) Frances greenwood peabody, washington gladden, walter rauschenbusch. Also black church emphasis on human dignity and soc justice. Underlying importance of women actors and their institutions, socialism. Increasingly seen less as foreign idea, more as force that can shape democ/relig. Tho in the end prots were v focused on relig--not overly pro-socialist.
