Prog movement is inherently fluid, and advocates for fluidity in the most general way one can conceive. Socialism means diff thing to diff classes. Simultaneously, increasing integration w more mainstream poli. Intertwined w populist movement, but more focus on cities, industrial labor, multi- ethnic visions. Wanted 2 b mainstream enuf 2 run candidates. V diverse, but not dominated by any 1 imm group. Prominent women--but not so much @ leadership level. Advocated strong wealth redistribution importance of democracy. Ran eugene debs for us pres 5x. Idea that politics holds group 2gether, not culture/ethnicity. City as center of vice, but also opp for ministry (esp among imms) Frances greenwood peabody, washington gladden, walter rauschenbusch. Also black church emphasis on human dignity and soc justice. Underlying importance of women actors and their institutions, socialism. Increasingly seen less as foreign idea, more as force that can shape democ/relig. Tho in the end prots were v focused on relig--not overly pro-socialist.
