Ira mauro, friar and cartographer in venice from which the portuguese commissioned map in. 1450"s, engages and often disagreeing with ptolemy"s ideas says africa is circum- navigable on basis of what nicolo conti says (has heard of people driven s by winds and gone around africa). Poalo toscanelli c 1474 map reading ptolemy, people start thinking in terms of roundness and sphereity, used ptolemy"s numbers to argue europe close to japan. Sail west instead of going to africa, portuguese said no! Had some of best astronomers and knew world was bigger.
