Frederick the wise (1463-1525), elector of saxony. Luther human beings incapable of good without divine grace, scripture as soul source of proof. Nationalist call to reform german church, create national church based on german language, german developing as literary language. 1521 new testament, 1524 old testament, 1534 full bible. Not puritan, musical instruments had place in church, not hostile to images provided people did not worship images. Problem was images seen by some as performing miracles in and of itself, Protestants hostile to that (st. only great people) whereas catholics did it. Relics didn"t have any value in point of view of salvation, no point of view of collecting, shouldn"t use, displaying it means you think it has power. Attack on monasticism not in bible, involved additional vows he thought was inappropriate because baptism is sole vow (importance of infant baptism).
