Nationalist poli movements emerge in all 3 groups. Lajos kossuth--demanded separate hungarian finance syst, reorganized army, abolition of serfdom (at the benefit of the state) Student activists called for abolition of censorship, freedom of speech. Emperor ferdinand 1835-48 was not receptive to students" petition. United diet of austria and hungary called to look at reforms. More protests, censorship lifted, non-imperial troops outnumber imperial 40-1. Slovenes divided btwn jurisdictions, so not well represented anywhere. Meanwhile, serbs declare own autonomous admin unit. Count joseph radetzky--fights italian kingdom of piedmont and pushes to quick peace treaty. Resulted in development of industry, modernization of ag. Peasants moving into cities made urban areas predominantly czech or slovene, not german. Count theodor de latour lynched by student protesters in vienna. Court flees capital, takes most of govt w it. Policy of court b/came much more forceful. Ferdinand abdicates, nephew francis joseph takes power. Viennan assembly at this point in kromeriz, moravia.
