Large amt of deaths in wwi--old politicians running things. Decade of yugoslav artistic inspo (writing, sculpture) Abolished const, legi, ethnic parties, trade unions. At first, seemed like good change, things unified/stabilized/simplified. Greater poli amnesty (for all except communists) More controversial: overriding prev state lines w new geographic states. No longer a serbian army, now a yugoslav army. Ethnic politicians did not like, felt that aleksander did not trust former-habs. Spanish rev frightened aleksander--issued new const in sept 1931. Sen half appted by king, half indirectly elected. Tho monarch still had final veto, could regulate civ libs. 2 manifestos issued calling for new const, acknowledgement of ethnicity. Racist, fascist ideology that blamed all croatian probs on serba. Mussolini, hungary, incompetent french police also involved. Divide in govt btwn those who wanted to open up to opp and conservatives. New elections held--amazingly, many groups united to form opp bloc, which prob won despite hurdles. But govt said otherwise, even after recount.
