Late 19th century, time of rise of scientific racism and belief that human beings exist in a hierarchy: extraction from the top. Immigration became a huge issue: many europeans that came were from southern and eastern europe, religiously different and thought of as biologically separate and as inferior people (were not catholic, mostly jewish/russian orthodox) Extended a belief of white supremacy, was more than white over black but now white over everybody else. Industrializing economy was a driving force in every aspect of american life: us becoming the most powerful and industrialized nation in the world, required a large supply of labour and a massive amount of immigrations. Shapes the future and civil rights of society, long range effects.
