HIST 382 Lecture 3: Lecture 3 - Slavery and the Slave Trade
Document Summary
Lecture 3 - slavery and the slave trade. Long established feature of the dutch east india company. 1658, wrote back to the colony asking if he could import slaves. Purchased from existing slave trade systems in the indian ocean. Four mains of origin: continental africa, madagascar, india, indonesia. There was rivalry between the dutch east and west india company. East company fell back on asia trade networks. Has different features from the transatlantic slave trade: more dominantly female and house oriented, networks are more dispersed + ad hoc; this means it is hard to trace the dimensions of the trade. Slavery is supposed to be run by the company, for the company but company officials were making money on the side. Difficult to have a comprehensive figure of the amount of slaves in the cape colony - there were approximately 63,000 slaves in the cape colony from 1652-1808; but these were just the slaves that were on the book.
