Lecture 13 - methodism and the politics of religion. Some calvanists are methodists, but some are not. The movement defined by key figures that became a well defined religion. In the early 18th century the term methodism was used as an insult and it was not clear what it referred to. It means people who are outside the anglican church, doing irregular preaching and cannot be trusted for a variety of reasons. Throughout this period, people who were called or called themselves methodists wanted to stay within the anglican church and saw this as a revitalizing movement. It took 60 years for them to move out of the church and create their own denomination. The first group was at oxford, created what they called a holy club. They were accused of being obsessively methodical and every minute needed to be accounted for. People are trying to live a methodical life in which they are trying to maximize salvation.
