Document Summary

Lecture 11 - the war outside of europe: the mediter. Had been in existence for over 700 years before wwii. Reached from the borders of afghanistan to vienna. This was an empire in decline by the 19th century. Ruled by sultan abdulhamid ii who was an autocratic style of ruler. Building up of tensions by young military officers, 3 of whom will become the biggest power sharing leaders of the ottoman empire. The young turks wanted to modernize and adopt a more secular, european style of rule. Revealed as much division as unity within the empire. European countries tried to "pick off territory" when they had the chance. They felt a sense of encirclement, being surrounded and having their territory picked off. Germany sought to court the ottomans to have a means to destabilize entente powers if war was to come.
