Document Summary

Britain wasn"t ready for war, and chamberlain didn"t dare call hitler"s blu . If germany were ready for war, england was not prepared and that is why the negotiations continued with hitler. Britain also overestimated the strength of german armaments. Even practically speaking, it was logical for britain to postpone the war for as long as possible. However, they were sacri cing the wellbeing of other countries in the mean time. It"s simplistic to say it was a mistake to give in to hitler; there is much more one has to consider. Chiefs of the british imperial sta indicated that there was nothing britain could do to save czechoslovakia from invasion, expect in a long war in which germany would be defeated. It was the same problem with poland: there was basically nothing britain could do to intervene in hitler"s invasion of poland in 1939 except get involved in a long war.
