Lecture 5 - political crises of the 1850s. The mexican war had been instigated to a large extent by southern democrats who wanted to conquer mexico and use that territory for slavery. The free soil party got about 7% of the vote. The free soil vision in the north started becoming stronger, the war pumped the volume on this even more. This leads to the question of the territory taken from mexico. Leads to the larger question of slavery in the west.
