The democratic party disintegrated and split into three parties. Before lincoln is elected, in december of 1860 the first southern state to cede was south carolina. They were also the largest state with the biggest amount of african. The larger the black population, the more likely the state was to cede. A tariff bill was passed and went into law. Planters didn"t want to see high tariffs in the us because they thought there would be tariffs on their rice overseas. It was about taxes, but also the south was concerned about the power of the federal government that could affect the structure of the economy in the south. Greatest crisis in american history is happening while lincoln is getting ready to become president. Don"t recognize the legitimacy of the succession from the us and show a willingness to compromise. They are firm and will not alter their basic fundamental principle.
