Nationalism shaped by local circumstances, but caused broadly by international transition to industrialized society. Urbanization, grow in communications, industrialization cause nationalism. Work force increasingly mobile/communicative with different peoples. National education system replaces local low cultures with standardized high culture . Further, high culture needs state/state organizations to diffuse itself. Nationalism is the imposition of a high culture on society whereas previously low cultures had dominated. Minority people can define themselves against dominant high culture. Can create new high culture out of folk culture. People can become nation when upper classes brings larger population(s) into single community. It was thus that great britain came to be. Alternatively, intellectuals can promote a national revival using historical myths. This method exemplifies the resistance to british-ization.
