Lecture 18 : Diseases
From Presentations
• know special feature
• No spec. questions related to them, just use as examples
Definitions :
• Parasite = organism that lives and draws resources from a host, to the detriment of the host
o Microparasites - virsues, bacteria, protozoa, fungi
o Macroparasites - worms (helminths) and arthropods
✓ Grooming removes parasites
• Disease – pathology of an infection
Transmission
• Close Contact : e.g. sexual vs non-sexual (grooming)
• Environmental : e.g. Ascaris
• Vector bone (e.g. malaria, zika, chaga - go through intermediate hosts)
• Intermediate Host (e.g. schistosomiasis)
Free-Living Primates compared to humans * CHART
• Helminths are more common in these than humans that are directly transmitted parasite since
we clean the food we eat before we ingest it
• We don't eat food usually from the ground or trees (processed)
• Protozoans are the same way - filtered water compared to free running water that have animal
poop in it
1. Primate – Human diseases
• Zoonotics
▪ Definition: Diseases transmitted from animals to humans
