INDS 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Pregnenolone, Heteroatom, Methyl Group
Document Summary
To understand special role of fat soluble steroid molecules in endocrine control. To understand their synthesis by the p450 waste disposal system. To demonstrate the production of different steroids in different tissues. To begin to understand the complex effects they mediate at cell level: introduction. Complex multi benzene ring derivatives - they are not flat: cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene skeleton (a, b, c, d rings, presence of methyl group (most steroids have 2 methyls). Metabolism changes their 3d appearance thus effect e. g. progesterone. Relatively simple molecule, can be converted into several metabolites but that have hugely different roles. Steroid hormone production: glands that produce steroid hormones are cholesterol synthetic glands (ovary, adrenal, testes) = full of fat, synthetic enzymes are part of p450 system whose major role is in detoxification. Modifying enzymes modifies our response to the environment. Steroid hormone action: enters cell nucleus and binds dna response element.
