Development as a unidirectional western idea: idea of bringing good change = to be modern, philosophical roots: the european enlightenment, unidirectional and teleological concept, assumption= based on the western experience of modernization, ignoring pathways in non-western countries. Assumptions: division between developed and developing countries is largely determined by income. Macro comparative analysis: explains variation in economic development.
