Hard to document lives of people living in palestine in 1800s. Lower rate of literacy than in europe. As jews are being expelled from europe/life there is declining, ottoman empire is on the rise and welcoming jews. Takes in 150,000 jewish refugees from eastern europe. Ott rule in palestine lasts about 400 yrs, barring brief time during crusades. Region had been under muslim rule since 638. In ottoman empire, and is true for palestine, regions subdivided, with cities as the hubs. These regions don"t coincide with current political borders. 670 villages in region, where most people live. Most density of villages in mountains/hills, where there was more refuge from raids by nomadic tribes. Villages typically had organized by hamula aka patrilineal clans. Grain and olive farming were prominent occupations. C. 1800, jerusalem has pop of 8,000-10,000, acre 8,000, gaza 8,000. Women from villages oft traveled to city courts to get more favorable application of traditional property laws.
