LSCI 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Denitrifying Bacteria, Anaerobic Respiration, Citric Acid Cycle

46 views4 pages

Document Summary

There are alternative pathways for many different organisms. Bacteria all smell different from their metabolic pathways. When there is no oxygen around, they can do anaerobic respiration which means they will have to use a different final electron receptor other than oxygen. Fermentation nadh will be oxidized not by the electron transport chain. It depends on what is in the environment wheatear it will do aerobic, anaerobic, or fermentation. Denitrifies are bacterium that can use nitrate as the final electron acceptor. Some use chlorate and other toxic compounds, it is not found in many organisms. Higher in the table = generate less energy. Start with nitrate and reduce it to dinitrogen. If o is not present, e. coil uses nitrate. This means only 6 protons will be pumped out. When there is o present it makes the o chain. When it is not it can use nitrate.
