MECH 290 Lecture 3: lecture 3-Design for manufacturing I (1)
Document Summary
Variety of work materials can be machined. Variety of part shapes and special geometric features possible: Generally performed after other basic manufacturing processes, such as casting, forging, and bar drawing. Other processes create the general shape of the starting workpiece. Machining provides the final shape, dimensions, finish, and special geometric details that other processes cannot create. Rotational - (a) cylindrical or disk-like shape. Part geometry is decided by 1) relative motions between the tool and workpiece, 2) shape of the cutting tool. Single point cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece to form a cylindrical shape. Designs should allow for the termination of threads. Attempts should be made to eliminate shallow, blind tapped holes. Design considerations must be taken into account: Chamfers should be specified at the ends of threaded sections. Thin-walled parts should have sufficient thickness and strength. Parts should be designed to be fixtured and clamped easily into work-holding devices.
