People"s core values challenged by developments in physics, biology, psychology etc. Traditional laws of biblical authority and psychological certainty in question. E. g. sigmund freud"s psychoanalysis modernism and the avant-garde. Paris and vienna as artistic centres of avant-gardism. Artists, writers, composers, etc. , were newly self-conscious of being on the vanguard of culture. Tendency towards abstraction in visual arts and literature. Movements in visual arts like impressionism, symbolism, and expressionism. Writers challenged conventions of grammar, syntax, spelling, style. Claude debussy, igor stravinsky, and arnold schoenberg. More broadly, modernism encompasses more than the avant-garde core. All modernist composers, regardless of insider/outsider status in relationship to the avant-garde core, was newly aware of their place in music history. New emphasis on technique, de-emphasis of expression. Avant-garde core challenged basic musical conventions regarding melody, motive, harmony, tonality, timbre, and rhythm.
