Urban folk has a number of paradoxes. Folk music: music that survives in an oral rather than a written report, persevered in face to face encounters with people. Urban folk: shared through mass mediated technology, but involves a suspicions of disbelief: first gathered momentum in 1930s. Many were black or white southerners brought to nyc and were associated with leftist. Popular front political movement, eg. john and alan lomax and charles seeger: musical style derived in large part from the ballad tradition of white rural. Southerners and shared qualities of the hillbilly music period. Urban folk used the assistance of rural, traditional music to evoke a sense of timeless purity. Memorialized the ha(cid:396)dships e(cid:374)du(cid:396)ed (cid:271)(cid:455) the (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) folk, guth(cid:396)ie"s lyrics were pro- labour and pro-working class but sufficiently populist. Guthrie joined the amanci singers: stressed political and social issues such as the importance of civil rights and labour unions.
