By the end of the 1950s it seems all the first great rnr artists are out (different reasons) Chuck berry is in trouble with the law. Jerry lee lewis is blacklisted for marrying his thirteen year-old cousin. Buddy holly, richie valens, and the big bopper have died in a plane crash. Within the radio business, payola was often considered a compliment by djs because it validated the importance of their program. Host of the abc program american bandstand (beginning in 1956, became national in 1957) show became the biggest and widely distributed show at the time. They"re small, the focus on region- by-region development not very wide spread. A spot on a national show could be a huge break (as it was with elvis on ed sullivan) incentive to have dick clark play your song. Promoted a style of music known as teen pop to a an audience primarily composed of white teenagers.
